Discussion Groups

Subby hosted reading and discussion groups in your future?  They might be.

So we here at the bookstore have been thinking– and we want to start hosting discussion groups!

We’ve been pondering modeling the program after a group we saw at another store in another state.  That discussion series is held once a month and usually themed over 3 months and often guest speakers are brought in to help facilitate discussions. People can attend all the discussions or just drop in for the book/subject that they are interested in.  The series they did this past fall was “Beginning Dialogs” – a discussion of faith & spirituality using The Faith Club, Three Cups of Tea, & Breakfast with Buddha as the 3 monthly books.  Their winter series will begin in Jan and will be “What’s the Big Deal?”  – A look at award winning literature/authors.

Is there interest here in something like that?  Of course it would be tailored to fit our clientele and the types of things folks are asking for.  So what would you like to discuss?

We’re thinking broad genres (like, say, “literature” or “current affairs” or “philosophy” or “sociology” or “science” etc) .  We may throw a few specific ones out there too.

Post comments and let us know that you’re interested in participating and share your opinions on the groupings or on specific book titles.  When we have enough interest lined up we’ll start hosting!

Important note: We want all of you to be as directly involved in this process as possible, so spare no considerations.

As a bookworm loner who rarely interacts with other human beings, this sounds interesting. How ’bout post-modern literature/art/philosophy/critical theory – with an emphasis on what exactly makes a ‘post-modern’ text ‘post-modern’ ?

Ooh, that would be interesting wouldn’t it? We’d need a really good moderator, though.

Well, on my own personal quest to knowledge, I have taken it upon myself to read some of the works of those who are currently nominated for Secretary positions in the Obama White House. Potential list could be: “Critical” by Tom Daschle, one of Obama’s books, and Tim Geithner’s book. Could be an interesting glimpse into the future of this administration.

I agree with the people who have written above. I would really enjoy meeting other book lovers in a discussion group. I’m pretty much open to any genre’ so please let me know if this comes about.
    Cheers to all!

Hey-a great idea and unique to STL. Try it at least three times and see how it feels after that.

I used to host a reading group in my home – it was wonderful and well worth the investment in time. I would love to go to your reading group (I would even bake something for the meetings). As far as what to read goes, I’m open to nearly anything. I’ve always thought an interactive self-improvement reading group would be fun and beneficial.

I’m interested in joining in…also have been a past member of a book club in another city and miss the discussion. I find it a good thing to be directed to read something I might not otherwise consider reading. So keep me posted please.

I would love to know if Subterranean is holding any book clubs. I live right near the loop so I could make it almost any time. I am open to reading just about anything.

I would love to be a part of a book club! I’m pretty open-minded when it comes to books, so let me know…

I’m interested. Hope the groups meet on weeknights so I can come. Sounds kul.

Sounds good. Perhaps – to encourage direct involvement – you could list on a side poll six books/topics/etc. that we could choose from to see if there’s any sort of consensus.
