City Academy

We’ve copied this program from our friends at Left Bank and their successful elementary school sponsorships.  We’re partnering with City Academy to find sponsors to help City Academy’s new junior kindergarten students (four year olds) improve their personal libraries.  By sponsoring a young reader, you would commit to purchasing one book each month for an academic semester (January 2010 - May 2010).  You can then choose whether you would like to renew for each subsequent semester.

City Academy teachers and Subterranean employees will select the books and Subterranean will handle the transactions, applying a 20% discount to each book purchased by each child’s sponsor. The books will range between $8-$15 each month.

City Academy teachers will create activities related to the books’ themes and characters to help families to extend and deepen their children’s learning at home. Sponsors will receive updates on titles purchased and will receive photos of the children with their books.

City Academy is located at 4175 N Kingshighway and was founded in 1999 by Don Danforth III and Duncan Marshall as a result of their volunteer experience at Mathews-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club. City Academy grew out of the ideals behind the success of the Mathews-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club whose mission is to provide children in the city with the same opportunities as those in more affluent neighborhoods.

City Academy is:

  • Private, independent, non-parochial elementary school
  • Grades Junior Kindergarten (age 4)-Sixth Grade
  • Located in North St. Louis to serve urban youth in a neighborhood setting
  • Founded in 1999 based on the ideals and success of the Mathews-Dickey Boys’ and Girls Club; moved into new facility in 2004
  • Graduates attend a variety of independent and parochial schools in the metro area, including Chaminade, Crossroads, John Burroughs, MICDS and Whitfield

We’re currently seeking interested sponsors for the Spring 2010 Semester. The program can only work if we have enough sponsors for every child in the class, and if we don’t get enough to cover the full class we won’t be able to run the program.

If you have any questions or are interested in taking part please contact Kelly at Subterranean 314-862-6100 or Matt Virgil, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at City Academy at 314-382-0085, ext. 108.

We urge you to visit the City Academy website to learn more about this amazing school.

*UPDATE* The books for the 2009 Fall Semester have been picked.  They are:

Splat the Cat by Rob Scotton, hc
